There are several easy steps you can take to improve your indoor air quality. You may not need all of them but the more you do, the fresher, cleaner, and healthier your indoor air will be.

Clean your house Cleaning and sanitizing your house regularly can go a long way toward reducing pathogens, dust mites, and allergens that can lead to serious health problems. Use a good vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to suck up dust mites and other small particulates, even pathogens that might have gotten tracked in on the floor. There are room deodorizers that help to remove allergens as well. Go shoeless

Did you know you track millions of particles and potential pathogens through your house just by coming through the front door? It’s true! Keep a mat and shoe rack right at your front door, and kick off your shoes when you come into the house. Ask your guests to go without shoes, as well. Keep a pair of comfy slippers handy in the wintertime to keep your feet toasty. Your indoor air quality will thank you.

Let in some fresh air

This may not be possible in colder months, but whenever possible, open up the windows and even the front door. Let some air circulate in your house from outside. This will get the stale air you’ve been breathing out and replace it with cleaner, fresher air, which in turn helps you to stay healthier and breathe easier.

Watch out for mold

Mold is an invader that can crop up in almost anyone’s home, and it’s insidious. Once it’s there, it’s almost impossible to get rid of entirely, because it travels on clouds of spores that are invisible to the human eye. It can cause serious allergy flare-ups and respiratory illnesses which can put you and your family at risk.

If you notice ugly black, pink, or yellow patches on your walls, especially in damp places such as bathrooms or basements, you’ll want to get that taken care of quickly.
