Is Your AC Ready for Summer?

Is Your AC Ready for Summer?

Georgia summers have a way of sneaking up on you, and let’s be honest—no one wants to discover their air conditioner isn’t up to the task on that first scorching day.

Think of this as your AC’s annual wellness check. Just like you wouldn’t run a marathon without training, your cooling system needs a proper warm-up before the heat hits. Here’s how to get your AC ready for what is sure to be a hot summer.

Grab a New Air Filter

Every AC system has at least one air filter. And that filter is your first line of defense against poor indoor air quality: dust, pollen, and bacteria that can trigger allergies and severe respiratory issues.

Dirty air filters don’t just harbor contaminants; they force your AC system to work harder. Regular cleaning and replacement will keep you healthy, reduce energy bills, and minimize system strain.

Clean the Inside of Your Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor air conditioner takes a beating from grass clippings, dust, and whatever Mother Nature throws at it. Start your summer by giving your system a deep clean.

Before you begin, remember safety first: Cut power to the unit at the outdoor disconnect and your circuit breaker. Next, remove the top grill and gently clean out any twigs and leaves, using a shop vac for hard-to-reach places. To loosen stubborn grit, grab a hose and spray through the outside, taking care not to damage those delicate fins.

If you notice rust, severe buildup, or any damage, reach out. Our AC repair specialists will get your unit in tip-top shape.

Thermostat Check

If you’re still using an old-school thermostat, check that it’s working correctly by adjusting the temperature five degrees below room temperature. If your AC unit doesn’t kick on in a minute or two, check the batteries and wire connections.

And while you're at it, consider updating to a smart thermostat. These modern marvels only require manually adjusting temperatures a few times daily for the first week. Thereafter, they will learn your heating and cooling preferences and automatically adjust.

Inspect Ductwork & Airflow

Your ductwork carries cool air throughout your home. And if it has leaks, gaps, or blockages, you may experience air loss, reduced efficiency, and uneven temperatures.

To test efficiency, walk through your home, inspecting each vent for proper airflow by holding a piece of paper or tissue—it should stick to the vent when the system is running.

Next, look for any visible damage to exposed ductwork and listen for whistling sounds. While you can seal small gaps with metal tape, larger issues may require professional maintenance or duct cleaning. Not only will this service restore proper airflow, but it will also mitigate airborne contaminants like dust, pollen, and bacteria.

Signs Your AC Needs Replacement

While regular AC maintenance will extend system lifespan, sometimes it just makes financial sense to invest in a new unit. Here are common signs it’s time to upgrade:

Age

If your AC system is over a decade old, chances are it uses freon or R-22 coolant. Due to environmental safety reasons, manufacturers have stopped using this substance. While conversion kits are available, you may need to weigh the cost-benefits of repair versus replacement, especially if your air conditioner is over 15 years old.

Poor Performance

Poor AC performance is often caused by:

  • Blocked air vents
  • Air duct leaks
  • Clogged air filters
  • Lack of regular system maintenance

However, if you've addressed these issues and your system is still underperforming, it could signal more serious issues. Low refrigerant levels, compressor issues, or a failing blower are often the culprits. If you find yourself regularly calling for service, it may be time to upgrade.

Foul Odors

Musty smells from your AC vents may indicate that you need to replace your air filter. However, if you’ve cleaned or replaced your filter and the smell persists—or worse, you smell burning plastic or metal—immediately turn off your system and call our expert technicians.
