Heat pumps rely on a refrigerant—typically R-410A—to absorb and release heat as it changes from liquid to gas. Let’s break this complex process down into simple language:

  • Absorption: The refrigerant flows through coils in the outdoor unit, where it pulls heat from the surrounding air (even in cold temperatures). As the refrigerant passes through, it absorbs this heat and evaporates into a gas.
  • Compression: Next, the system compresses the gas, increasing the temperature even more.
  • Release: The hot, pressurized gas now moves through the indoor coil, releasing heat into your home as it cools back down and condenses into a liquid.
  • Repeat: Finally, the refrigerant returns to the outdoor unit, and the process repeats.

In summer, the process is reversed: Heat is pulled from inside your home and released outside.

Do Heat Pumps Replace Traditional HVAC Systems?

Yes, heat pumps are generally designed to replace your furnace and air conditioner with a single system.

In some cases, particularly in cold climate regions, homeowners may choose to keep their existing furnace as a backup. With this setup, the heat pump runs most of the time. The furnace only clicks on when the heat pump cannot keep up with extremely low temperatures.

  • Ductless mini-split heat pumps are ideal for homes without ductwork.
  • Hybrid heat pumps allow you to combine a heat pump with a traditional furnace. In this configuration, the heat pump handles most of the heating. The furnace only kicks on in extreme cold.
