Refrigerant is the chemical compound that circulates through your AC system, absorbing heat from inside your home and releasing it outside, and it's the reason your house cools down at all. It's also one of the most misunderstood parts of a cooling system: what it actually is, which type your system uses, and why the EPA keeps changing the rules around it. And why "topping it off" every summer usually means something's wrong. We're Air Control Heating and Air, and we've been servicing systems across Roswell, Alpharetta, and North Atlanta since 1993. This guide covers all of it in plain English, so you know exactly what you're paying for the next time refrigerant comes up in a service call.

What Is Refrigerant, and How Does It Work?

Refrigerant works by changing state. It absorbs heat when it evaporates into a gas inside your home, then releases that heat when it condenses back into a liquid outside. That cycle runs continuously: evaporation, compression, condensation, expansion. It is what pulls warm air out of your home and sends cool air back in. No refrigerant means no cooling, full stop.

The refrigerant itself isn't consumed in the process. It's not fuel. A correctly operating system uses the same charge of refrigerant for its entire service life. It cycles through a sealed loop of coils, lines, and valves thousands of times without losing any of it. That single fact is the key to understanding almost everything else in this guide, including why a system that keeps needing refrigerant is telling you something specific.

Freon vs. Refrigerant: What's the Difference?

Freon is a brand name, not a type of refrigerant. It belongs to Chemours, originally DuPont, and it has been used on several different refrigerants over the decades, including R-12 in old cars and R-22 in home air conditioners. Refrigerant is the correct general term for all of them. People often use "Freon" the way they use "Kleenex," as a catch-all for the whole category.

Knowing the difference matters because R-22 hasn't been manufactured since 2020, while current systems use R-410A or newer A2L refrigerants like R-454B. If a technician tells you your system needs "Freon," ask which refrigerant they actually mean. The answer changes what your repair options and costs look like. HVAC Refrigerant Types: From R-22 to R-410A to A2L

Residential HVAC systems have relied on three main refrigerant types over the past few decades: R-22, R-410A, and now A2L refrigerants like R-454B. Each replaced the last for the same underlying reason: environmental regulation.

The short version: R-22 is gone, R-410A is out of production, and A2L refrigerants are what new systems use.

R-22 (Freon)

R-22 was the residential standard for most of the 20th century. It cools effectively, but it depletes the ozone layer. So the EPA phased it out in two steps. New R-22 systems could no longer be built after January 1, 2010. All production and import stopped on January 1, 2020. If your system was installed before 2010, roughly 16 years old or more, it likely still runs on R-22. Check the nameplate on your outdoor unit if you aren't sure. Repair costs keep climbing as remaining supply shrinks; it's worth reviewing upgrade savings for older AC systems before those repair bills add up.

R-410A (Puron)

R-410A replaced R-22 and became the dominant refrigerant in residential air conditioning systems from roughly 2010 through 2024. It doesn't harm the ozone layer, but it carries a high Global Warming Potential, or GWP, of 2,088. Over a hundred years, one pound of it traps more than 2,000 times the heat of one pound of carbon dioxide. That number is why it's now being phased out too.

A2L Refrigerants (R-454B, R-32)

A2L refrigerants are the current generation: mildly flammable, but far lower in GWP. R-454B, marketed as Puron Advance, has a GWP of 466 and is the most common replacement in new residential systems. R-32, with a GWP of 675, is the choice at Daikin, Goodman, and Amana, and it's common in ductless mini-splits and heat pumps. These GWP values come from the IPCC figures the EPA uses in its Technology Transitions program, linked below.

The R-410A Phase-Out: What the 2025 EPA Regulations Mean for You

Under the EPA's Technology Transitions Rule, manufacturers stopped building and importing residential AC and heat pump equipment charged with refrigerant above 700 GWP on January 1, 2025. R-410A, at 2,088, is above that line. R-454B (466) and R-32 (675) are under it.

Here's what that actually means depending on your situation:

  • Buying a new system now: most equipment on the market is R-454B or R-32. The EPA removed the installation cutoff for R-410A equipment built before 2025 in a rule effective July 27, 2026, so remaining R-410A inventory can still be installed legally until it runs out. If a quote includes R-410A equipment, ask how that affects long-term refrigerant cost, because R-410A supply keeps tightening under the AIM Act phasedown. Equipment costs have also risen, largely due to the added safety components required for mildly flammable A2L refrigerants. We'll show you the actual numbers on your quote rather than a national average
  • Running an existing R-410A system: nothing about this rule affects a system already installed and running. The rule restricts new equipment, not systems already installed and in use, so your system can keep running and being serviced for the rest of its useful life
  • Running an older R-22 system: this is where the math gets serious. R-22 production ended in 2020 and remaining supply is expensive. When repair costs approach replacement costs, we'll tell you honestly which way to go

The federal tax credits that used to offset this kind of upgrade are gone. The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit ended for anything placed in service after December 31, 2025, so a system installed in 2026 doesn't qualify. What remains are Georgia utility rebates, manufacturer promotions, and financing. The short version: new equipment uses R-454B or R-32, and nothing requires you to replace a working R-410A system.

Whichever refrigerant your system runs on, though, the amount inside it should never change. That's where most homeowners get quietly overcharged.

Why Your AC Shouldn't Need a Yearly Refrigerant Top-Off

A correctly charged AC system never needs refrigerant added, because it runs through a sealed loop that doesn't lose charge through normal use. If a technician tops off your refrigerant every year, or even every few years, that's not routine maintenance. It's a sign of an active leak that isn't being fixed. We've been doing this in Roswell since 1993, and topping off a leaking system every summer isn't maintenance. It's a bill that repeats.

Refrigerant doesn't burn off or wear out the way fuel does. Every "top-off" is refrigerant that has escaped into the atmosphere from somewhere in your lines, coils, or fittings, then gets replaced instead of repaired. That cycle gets more expensive every time it repeats. You pay for the refrigerant and the labor, year after year, and the leak is still there. It's the same math behind why cutting corners on HVAC maintenance costs more in the long run.

The short version: a sealed system doesn't lose refrigerant, so a yearly top-off means a leak.

Signs of an AC Refrigerant Leak

The clearest signs of a refrigerant leak are warm air from the vents, ice forming on the indoor coil or outdoor line, and a hissing or bubbling sound near the unit. Low refrigerant means your system can't absorb heat efficiently, so it works harder and runs longer to reach the same temperature.

Watch for these signs together, since any single one can have other causes:

If you notice two or more of these at once, have a technician check refrigerant levels before the compressor takes on extra strain. Running a system low on refrigerant for an extended stretch can shorten the compressor's life, since it's forced to work harder than it's designed to. Catching a slow leak early is most of what a spring tune-up is for, and it's why Comfort Club members tend to find coil problems while they're still small.

What Causes an AC Refrigerant Leak?

Most of the leaks behind those symptoms start at the evaporator coil. A slow corrosion process called formicary corrosion eats tiny pinholes into the copper tubing over years of normal operation. The acid that does the damage forms when condensation on the cold coil meets volatile organic compounds drifting through your indoor air. Those are the compounds that off-gas from cleaning products, aerosol sprays, air fresheners, new paint, and new flooring. Humid North Atlanta summers keep the coil wet longer, which gives the reaction more time to work. It's one reason indoor air quality and system longevity are the same conversation.

Other leaks start at worn Schrader valves, the small fittings technicians use to access the refrigerant lines. Weak or corroded flare fittings and brazed joints are common too, along with vibration damage in the line set on outdoor units that have shifted over time. Older R-22 systems tend to accumulate small leaks over decades, while newer R-410A or A2L systems more often develop a single failed connection than widespread wear. A 10- to 15-year-old system that suddenly starts needing refrigerant is usually telling you the coil has reached that stage.

What Happens When We Find a Leak

Finding the leak is its own job, and it comes before any conversation about repairs. A technician pressure-tests the system, then narrows the location with an electronic detector or by circulating UV dye and checking the coil, fittings, and line set under a black light. That's the step that tells you whether you're looking at a small fix or a large one.

From there, there are three realistic outcomes:

  • Repair the connection. If the leak is at a Schrader valve, a flare fitting, or a brazed joint, it's an accessible repair. The system gets sealed, evacuated, and recharged to the manufacturer's specified weight, not topped off by feel.
  • Replace the evaporator coil. Formicary corrosion can't be patched. A pinholed coil is replaced, and if your system is still under manufacturer warranty, the part is often covered while the labor isn't.
  • Replace the system. Sometimes the coil is obsolete, the system runs on R-22, or the compressor has already been strained by months of low charge. In those cases, a coil replacement can cost most of what a new system does.

Here's our rule, and it hasn't changed since 1993: when the repair cost starts approaching the replacement cost, we tell you plainly, show you both numbers, and let you make the call. We don't sell a system to a homeowner who needs a fitting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Refrigerant

No, a correctly sealed AC system holds its full refrigerant charge for its entire service life, often 15 years or more. Needing it topped off annually means there's an active leak that should be found and repaired, not refilled on a schedule.
